How To Increase The Properties of Tungsten Carbide

Apr 15, 2024

To increase the performance of tungsten carbide cold heading products, our company’s tungsten carbide Cold heading Die Blanks are all quenched and tempered after sintering. Quenching and tempering is the process of heating the sintered carbide blank in a high-pressure gas quenching furnace to above 1300 degrees Celsius, rapidly cooling it, and then reheating it for tempering treatment. During this process, as the temperature increases, the solubility of tungsten carbide in cobalt increases. The rapid cooling of the temperature makes it difficult for tungsten carbide dissolved in the cobalt phase to precipitate, and some or all of it is retained. After tempering, eliminate the internal hardening force during quenching. By controlling the decomposition and diffusion of saturated solid solutions, the metallographic composition and microstructure of the carbide are changed, achieving an improvement in performance.

As a manufacture of tungsten carbide dies and Tungsten Carbide Wear Resistance Parts, we have a 19 years history on study of tungsten carbide.

What is the benefits to heat treat the tungsten carbide cold heading die ?

1. Improve the hardness and wear resistance of tungsten carbides: Heat treatment can change the morphology and size of carbides in hard tungsten carbides, thereby altering their hardness and wear resistance.

2. Improving the toughness of hard tungsten carbides: Heat treatment can improve the toughness of hard tungsten carbides and prevent defects such as cracking and peeling by refining grain size, eliminating internal stress, and unifying chemical composition.

3. Improving machining performance: tungsten carbides that have undergone heat treatment usually have better cutting and grinding performance, which is beneficial for improving production efficiency and machining quality.

4. The heat treatment process increases the plastic deformation and plastic deformation work of the tungsten carbide by 0.5 to 1 times. The same bending strength has different plastic deformation amounts. The larger the plastic deformation, the more work the deformation absorbs, resulting in a 30% increase in impact toughness.
