What is cold heading mold?

Mar 28, 2024

A cold heading mold is a mold used in the cold heading process, which applies pressure to the metal material at room temperature (without heating) to deform it, thereby forming parts of the desired shape.

Carbide cold heading molds have the characteristics of high strength, high wear resistance and high heat resistance, and can withstand high temperature and high pressure working environments. The cold heading mold cuts, preforms and shapes the blank into cold formed parts on the cold heading machine. Cold heading is a precision plastic volume forming technology. The metal blank is placed into the mold cavity in a cold state. Under strong pressure and a certain speed, the metal material is forced to flow plastically to obtain the desired shape and size. and extruded parts with certain mechanical properties.

The design structure of cold heading dies is usually complex, including multiple parts and convex/concave die combinations, which can achieve a variety of deformation methods, such as upsetting, forward and reverse extrusion, composite extrusion, punching and rolling, etc. After heat treatment of the cold heading mold, the surface must have high hardness and the core must have good toughness. In this way, there is a certain compressive stress on the surface that can offset the stress experienced during the cold heading process.
